Good condition Mexican wool serape. The center design is unusual with the Mexican and American flags. I believe this to be from 40s- 50s era. Some minor ... moremoth chews but to small to photograph. I noticed a strange area with a weave irregularity. Maybe a pull but it looks like something that happened during the weaving. Not sure. Photographed on a double bed. Welcome To The Premier Place For Serious Collectors of Fine Authentic African Tribal Art Over 10 Years Online Serving Thousands of Satisfied Customers ... moreOffering the Finest Quality Sub-Saharan African Art Fine Old African Mali Dogon Animal Mask– White Monkey Inches: Height: 14.5 Inches Centimeters: Height: 37 Centimeters Measurement Mask Only Material: Wood Estimated Age: Early 20th Century Condition: Fair- Good Remarks: Highly stylized angular mask form zoomorphic attribute weathered aged surface Shipping: US East Coast- Estimated $16.00 Exact rate use shipping calculator INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS WELCOME Documentation of Authenticity/ Any Available Provenance Will Be Included With This Piece CONDITION Wood deterioration. BACKGROUND Seventy-eight different types of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. All of them have large geometric eyes and stylized features. Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance is only understood by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask to a captivated audience. In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobb

Up for sale Fine Mid 20th Century African Tribal Art Ibibio Idiok Mask. Nigeria People: Ibibio Place: Nigeria H: 10" Mask is in good condition. Small ... morerepaired chip along inner edge can be seen detailed in the attached photos. Mask is carved in a heavy, dense wood and has a rich, black encrusted patina with evidence of use and handling. Small traces of red pigment can be seen in the right ear, and keloid-like tribal scarification markings alongside both ears are encrusted with white kaolin. It appears that one tooth is missing, though that could also be an intentional deformity component of the Idiok mask. The reserve side exhibits markings of an adze or other tool used to carve out the back. The Ibibio live in a largely dense tropical forested area in small village groupings where they exercise social control through the activities of male secret society known as Ekpo. This secret society in based upon a cult of ancestors who advise. Direct, and guide the Ibibio in all facets of their lives. It is a demanding exercise to identify all Ibibio masks as to their forms and functions for they are often subject to many sculptural influences and a number of their cult, ritual activities and masks are drawn from their larger neighbors the Igbo or the smaller groups including the Anang and the Oron Ibibio. Such masks danced by the exclusively male Ekpo Society are known as Idiok, Idiok is said to be an ugly mask that represents the dead seen as wandering spirits that are potentially evil and have dark powers. Masks with deformed features often play upon the idea of an anti-aesthetic as they depict physical deformities or the effects of disease characterizing evil or malevolent spirits. Item: Baule Medicine Vessel Specifications: 63 x 17 x 17 cm Origin: Ivory Coast(see ethnographical notes below) Context: Used to store concoctions of bush medicine. Medium: Timber Carving BAULE(BAOULE. ... moreBAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards. Or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. The Baule are agriculturists; yams and maize are the staples, supplemented by fish and game; coffee, cocoa and kola nuts are major cash crops. The importance of the yam is de

An old Swazi ceremonial axe with large blade. 98 cm and blade 46 cm Postage to be confirmed once I know destination.
THIS IS A RARE AND MAGNIFICENT ITEM. A GAZELLE OR ANTELOPE ON A BASE. ALL CARVED FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF WOOD. THE TYPE OF TIMBER IS UNKNOWN. WE EXPECT IT IS AN AFRICAN SPECIES. IT IS VERY HARD ... moreAND SMOOTH WITH A FINE GRAIN. THE MAKER SEEMS TO HAVE CHOSEN THIS PARTCIULAR PIECE OF TIMBER BECAUSE THE GRAIN FLOWS WITH THE LINES OF THE ANIMAL.SEE PICTURES. FROM APPEARANCES. WE WOULD ESTIMATE THIS TO HAVE BEEN CARVED SOMTIME AROUND THE 1940's OR 1950's. BUT THAT IS JUST OUR BEST GUESS. WE HAVE OWNED THIS CARVING FOR FIVE YEARS AND DO NOT KNOW IT'S HISTORY. IT IS BEAUTIFUL TO TOUCH AND HAS A LOVELY"PATINA OF AGE" THE BRASS BASE PLATE LOOKS ORIGINAL AND IS ENGRAVED WITH THE WORDS: HANDCRAFTED PATRICE LUMUMBA. IN RESEARCHING THE MAKER WE FOUND REFERENCE TO ONLY ONE MAN WITH THIS NAME. THE PATRICE EMERY LUMUMBA WE FOUND ON GOOGLE WAS AN AMAZING HERO OF AFRICA. BEFORE MANDELA. LUMUMBA WAS AN INSPIRATION TO ALL WHO STRUGGLED FOR FREEDOM. CHE GUEVARA CALLED HIM"THE MOST IMPORTANT MAN TO STAND ON AFRICAN SOIL. THERE ARE CURRENCY AND STAMP ISSUES DEDICATED TO HIM FROM MANY COUNTRIES.AND A UNIVERSITY IN RUSSIA NAMED AFTER HIM.AND MANY, MANY OTHER TRIBUTES. PATRICE EMERY LUMUMBA(2ND JULY 1925- 11TH FEBRUARY 1961) SPOKE OUT AND STOOD UP FOR THE FREEDOM OF HIS COUNTRY AND OF HIS PEOPLE. BECOMING THE FIRST DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO. A BRILLIANT AND CHARISMATIC LEADER. WHO WAS CRUELLY ASSINATED BY COLONIAL FORCES IN 1961. WE TRIED TO FIND OUT IF THIS MAN MAY HAVE CARVED OUR LITTLE GAZELLE. BUT WITH NO SUCCESS. WE DID EMAIL AN AMERICAN SCHOLAR WHO WAS FAMILIAR WITH PATRICE LUMUMBA IN 1960-61 AND THEY SAID HE DID NOT CARVE AND WOULD NOT HAVE ENGRAVED THE PIECE IN THIS WAY. WE WONDERED IF HE MAY HAVE CARVED THIS AS A YOUNGER MAN.DURING ONE OF THE TIMES THE COLONIAL GOVERNMENT IMPRISONED HIM? MAYBE SOMEONE WHO KNEW HIM AT THAT TIME MAY HAVE MOUNTED THIS CARVING IN THE BRASS BASE with the engraved words.BECAUSE IT ALL LOOK OF THE SAME AGE? WE D

Item: Baule Mblo Costume Mask Specifications: 36 x 24 x 12 cm Origin: Ivory Coast(see ethnographical notes below) Context: Used in skits and solo dances. The importance of the yam is demonstrated
RARE Antique African Bronze Oil Fertility Figure Oil Burner Yoruba Africa 19 C RARE Antique African Bronze Oil Fertility Figure Oil Burner Yoruba Africa 19 C Please look to Sotheby's Catalogues. ... moreMiller's& Carter's price guides for similar This impressive Lost Wax sculptural vessel was made by the Yoruba group of Nigeria. The Yoruba peoples of Nigeria have what is probably the longest extant artistic tradition in Africa. The nation state is comprised of numerous subsections that were joined historically by the rise and collapse of the Ife(12th to 15th centuries) and Benin(13th to 19th centuries) polities. Each of the sub-kingdoms– including Oyo. Ijebu and smaller units towards the west– had their heyday, and are loosely united through language and culture, although they still retain a measure of independence in terms of their artistic traditions. The Yoruba are sedentary. Agriculturist and hierarchical, and are ruled by hereditary kings known as Obas. Access to the supernatural world is supervised by a very complex arrangement of priests and spiritual intermediaries, who straddle the cosmological border between the tangible realm of the living(aye) and the invisible realm of the spirits and the hereafter(orun) The creator of the world is Olodumare– the source of all ase(life force) and his spiritual minions include all manner of spirits, gods and ancestors who can be appealed to or appeased through human intermediaries. Most Yoruban artistic heritage is designed to thwart evil spirits, and to placate or honour those that bring good fortune to the populace. Without contextual information. The function of this item is uncertain. Given its dimensions, it is likely to have occupied a ritual role, This is an impressive piece of African art. The Mossi derive from the marriage of a Dagomba princess and Mandé hunter. They got married and gave birth to the first authentic Mossi: Ouedraogo who is recognised as the father of Mossi people. Despite its status as a legend, it contains factual information: the Mossi originate from the Ashanti group, a Ghanaian entity composed of many subgroups. The Mossi also are also directly descended from the Dagomba people and similarly live in Upper East Ghana with a capital of Tamale. Mossi Empire As the Mossi people's history has been kept by oral tradition. It is impossible to assign precise dates for the period before colonization. The Mossi were able to conquer a vast amounts of territory thanks to their mastering of the horse, and created a prosperous empire and kept peace in the region until the beginning of colonialism. The expansion of the Mossi empire was stopped in the 19th century with the iniation of intensive colonisation by the French. The Mossi people have organis
