Made ci rca 1900-1930.This ... morecircular 3-part box includes a tall inner section over which the outer lid fits neatly and a single inner shallow tray. The style of decoration on this box is referred to as Nandwin. Or"King at Court. This decorative style concentrates on royal figures against a backdrop of wooden palace buildings. The King is depicted centrally on either side of the box with courtiers to either side. A finely detailed design scheme fills the remaining spaces in the broad central panel. Narrow registers above and below this contains floral, cloud and bird decorations. A total of four cartouches in each of these panels contain inscriptions in Burmese. The top surface also carries an inscription, above another scene of royalty amid palaces and a fortification wall, as well as a scene from Buddhist legend, possibly one of the Jatakas, or previous lives of the Buddha, in which a male figure armed with a bow takes aim at a large feline-like creature. The inside of the box as well as the shallow tray are lacquered red inside with floral panels and completely illustrated bottoms. The outer side of the box's lower half is also decorated entirely in Nandwin imagery. As well as 2 scenes of men and elephants, again possibly from the Jatakas. And the underside features a central dancing figure. The initials"Rm.v" appear in white India ink near the top of the box. Dimensions: 9.0 inches wide at the top. 8.0 inches tall. Being either well hidden or more likely buried during the Pol-Pot regime when all artistry and icons were destroyed or melted down. It weighs 8.7 ounces(245 grams) During the early to mid 1900's the norm in Khmer silver work was to use between 75 and 85% silver mixed with copper. The softer the metal the more copper and easier it is to work with. This piece is not soft but very solid. Very thick. The Silver Shop, 16 years ago, told me it was 85% silver. Silver was not $25 an ounce back then. How long it took to make this piece or if the Cambodian artist was more skilled than his counterparts I do not know. I can tell you there aren't many of these left and that this one is a stunning piece of detailed craftmanship. Sadly the Khmer who created it is long past and only his works survive. I am going to list several different boxes I bought while living in Southeast Asia but this is the only Elephant box I have. They are quite rare especially one of this detail. Please look at the photos using the magnifier and if you have any questions please write me. Thank you. Warren Below the explanation of repousse I have put my shipping info. Repoussé or repoussage is a technique in which a is ornamented or shaped by from the reverse side to create a design in. Chasing is the opposite technique to repoussé. And the two are used in conjunction to create a finished piece. It is also known as embossing. While repoussé is used to work on the reverse of the metal to form a raised design on the front. Chasing is used to refine the design on the front of the work by sinking the metal. The term chasing is derived from the noun"chase" which refers to a groove, furrow, channel or indentation. The adjectival form is"c
This is a box I bought in Burma back in 1997. During that time the country highly restricted tourism and so there were still antique Burmese handcrafted silver boxes available. This one is estimated ... moreto be early 1900's. I made the decision to clean it. It took me three hours but I took off over a 100 years of tarnish and dirt. This is now how it looked the day it was crafted. See the final four photos for comparison before and after. The dimensions when closed: 2 3/4 inches in length. 2 inches in width, 2 1/2 inches in height. The weight: 5.6 ounces or 160 grams. Silver content said to be 90% I'm listing six boxes I bought during the late 1990's in Burma and Cambodia so please check them all out and compare. I'm going to start the bidding for this piece at the price of the silver content alone plus $25 for what Ebay and PayPal charge me. I'll let all of you decide what the age and workmanship are worth. Thank you, Warren. I will ship Priority Mail with tracking and adult signature required. This is too valuable a piece to ship any other way.

Burmese artists created the puppet made of wood of which mobilized with the help of the strings attached to the different parts of the puppet. By that way. They replaced the puppets to the living dancers and which allowed the performance more convenient and more animated. They are made of different woods according to the different characters. They measure less than one meter high. The manipulating of puppet is an art and skill of the puppeteer. A Burmese puppet play is like a ballet- a story told with music and dances. The themes of the puppet plays were drawn from historic legends, the ten great lives and the 550 Birth stories of Lord Buddha. In China string puppet shows are also featured in a man's worship of the Jade Emperor on the eve of his wedding. And in similar ceremonies on the first birthday of a baby boy and the birthday of an elderly person. Marionettes often highlight the'earth-thanking' ceremony conducted when inaugurating a temple or moving into a new house. On such occasions, the marionette performance is regarded not as entertainment but as a solemn rite in reverence of and in thanksgiving and supplication to the gods.
